Retests

Generally, a student's placement test scores expire about 2 years.

If a student took the test over 2 years ago and did not complete the specfic course(s) required by the test, they must retest.
  • John took the test 3 years ago and placed into MAT 010 and COM 021. He took neither of these courses. He must retest.
  • Kate took the test 4 years ago and placed into MAT 020 and COM 051. She completed MAT 020 with a B but didn’t take COM 051. She does not need to retest for Math, but will need to retest for writing.
If a student took the test over 2 years ago, registered for the course(s) required for the test, and passed the course(s) with a C or better, they do NOT have to retest.
  • Alan took the test 2 ½ years ago and placed into COM 061. He earned a D in the course. He must retest.
  • Mary took the test 3 years ago and placed into MAT 010. She completed it with a B+. She may now register for MAT 020 without retesting.
  • Kate took the test 4 years ago and placed into MAT 020 and COM 051. She completed MAT 020 with a B but didn’t take COM 051. She does not need to retest for Math, but will need to retest for writing.
We need to be very careful when advising students who may now register for their next level without retaking the placement test. They must be told that it is their responsibility to ensure that they’ve retained enough information to move into the next level. If they are unsure, they should seek out materials to review from their first classes and prepare prior to starting the next level course. Diane, in particular, encouraged them to talk with a faculty member about what the next level is like if they are concerned about it.

Effective: 11/5/10
