ESL Bridge Reading Referrals

Please follow this process when working with students who place into Bridge Reading and score ESL on the writing sample:

Students who score below 40 on the Reading test

• refer to Zelda using current Community Education Referral Form and process

 Students who score 40-59 on the Reading test

•  review their placement test scores with them (as well as other new student information as appropriate)
• give them the Referral to the ESL Coordinator letter. On the letter, write the student’s name, ID number, a list of classes they could consider registering for if Elena approves them for ESL Reading 1 instead of Bridge Reading, and any relevant notes
• Instruct the student how to contact Elena for an appointment (also in the letter)

During their meeting, Elena will determine if the student really needs to start in Bridge Reading or if they can go right into ESL Reading 1. If they can go into Reading 1, she will use the course recommendations you list on the referral form to help the student register so they don’t have to schedule a 3rd appointment with an advisor for registration.
